So Long, Old Friend

* (Disclaimer- I may or may not have written this post last night with a half dozen beers in me) *

If there was 1 more nail that had to be driven into the coffin of Phil Hughes' tumultuous Yankee career, it happened over the weekend.  Hughes signed a 3-year/$24 million deal to join the Minnesota Twins rotation next year, in a deal that was a little more than I thought he'd get after the horrible finish to his 2013 but much less than a 27-year-old righty should be getting in this day and age of baseball spending.

I know I said the last post about Phil was the last one I'd write about him, but I just can't let it end like that.  Phil was an important part of my Yankee fandom, my transition to a more educated baseball fan in general, and my evolution as a blogger, and I'll always remember him for that.

You came into my life as a promising young stud, Phil.  I had high hopes for us.  You winning games and leading future Yankee rotations.  Me blushing at home and fanning myself while you struck out the side.  It was a match made in heaven.  Until things started to fall apart.  To be honest, I can't really pinpoint where things started to go wrong, but I knew that you weren't the pitcher I thought you were and I still don't think I'm fully over that.  You were my first prospect love, Phil.  And we'll always have that first spring 5th starter competition.  But now you're really gone and I think we're both better for it.  I wish you all the best in Minnesota.  Maybe I'll come out to visit sometime.  Probably not though.

F*cking Joba...

(Courtesy of the AP)

After all you've done this year to keep this team in sight of the playoffs, you put the season in Joba Chamberlain's hands?  Joba's??  Joba's.

I don't even have anything I can write that can describe how little sense that makes, Joe.  It defies explanation.  There is no explanation for it.  It was the exact opposite of what you did the night before quick hooking D-Rob and it rendered that decision meaningless.  I thought you did a hell of a job this season, you've made me a fan.  But it's going to take a while to try to figure out what that was tonight.

Fucking Joba.

Remember This?

"... the commitment to field a championship team is paramount, and that won’t change. Our fans expect that.”

How about this?

“All I can assure the fans is, we’re always going to field a championship-caliber team every single year.”

How's that working out for you, Hal?  Where did "getting absolutely shut down by Jesse Chavez" fall on that championship-caliber team plan?

Checking In With The AB4AR Sh*t List

It's been a staple of the sidebar of this site for quite some time now, but it hasn't been officially recognized in over 5 months.  That "it" is the AB4AR Shit List, the running list of things Yankee-related, and sometimes not, that are pissing me off.  It's a representation of my more irrational fan side, and the more immature early days of this site, but it's something that everybody can relate to on a personal level, and even if it's a few days too late now that the Yankees have started to turn things around (today's game aside), why not finish off our weekend with a little bit of hatred, huh?  I know I could certainly stand to blow off a little steam.

The long-updated list after the jump.  Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate!

S A Big D, Kansas City

And one that just worked out for an hour at the YMCA without showering at that.  You see that, Kansas City?  Do you?

That's reality.  That's Robinson Cano and the rest of the Yankees once again being on top of the American League while you wallow away in baseball purgatory for the umpteenth consecutive year.  And yeah, I made that big enough to not fit in the post window on this site for a reason.  You're 2nd to last in the weakest division in the entire league, and you have the 2nd worst run differential.  And you're upset that the AL HR Derby captain didn't pick somebody from your team to be in the derby?!  Get your fucking priorities straight!  Billy Butler is the best player on your fucking team and he's a DH.  What does that tell you???

The fact that the All Star Game is in your stadium this year is the first thing that's made you and your team matter in the baseball world in roughly 20-25 years.  That's back when George Brett was still relevant, and not some old fart talking about shitting himself during Spring Training and getting passed on the all-time hits list by Derek Jeter.

So go ahead and boo your fucking lungs out at Cano tonight.  Doesn't change the fact that he and his team are moving on to bigger and better things this season and your team will stop playing meaningful games sometime later this month.  And enjoy the sellout crowd tomorrow.  You guys should get to experience that at least once in your lives.  I'll see you in October.

Oh wait.  No I won't.

An "Oofda" For C-Grand

Curtis, Curtis, Curtis.  This is not how it's supposed to work, my dude.  I scratch your back, you scratch mine.  I slobber all over your nuts, you slobber...

Well OK, I guess we don't have to go there.  But still.  The Golden Sombrero?  Really???  Not kosher, bro.  Not kosher at all.

Being On The Wrong Side Of A Season-Opening Sweep Sucks

I know all the traditional sayings that are going to come out after today- "Still a lot of baseball to play;" "You can't win 'em all;" "Better luck next time;" "It's just one series."  That's all true and I believe all of that.  And I think it was incredibly nice of the Yankees to hand out all those free eggs on the scoreboard today for the kids on Easter Sunday.  But starting the season off getting swept on the road is never a good look, especially not when you're arguably the deepest and most talented team in the Majors like the Yankees are.  The way they lost these 3 games this weekend was disconcerting, as it harked back to last year's ALDS and all the things that did them in.  There was shaky starting pitching, questionable managerial decisions when it came to handling the pitching staff, and the inability of the lineup to get a timely hit or 2 when they really needed one. Given the way that they closed Spring Training, it looked like the regulars were ready to go and would hit the ground running, and instead they came out and laid an egg in the season-opening series.  As a Yankee fan, that's a tough pill to swallow.

There's a difference between losing and losing because you're not playing good baseball, and the Yankees really didn't play good baseball this weekend, which is the biggest thing that's sticking in my craw right now.  None of their starting pitchers pitched into the 7th inning of any game; their pair of lefty relievers combined to allow 3 ER on 3 H and 3 BB in 2.1 IP (2 of the 3 ER against left-handed hitters); their offense combined to hit 5-25 with RISP in the 3 games; and their manager definitely overmanaged his ace starting pitcher in the 1st inning of the 1st game of the year, maybe overmanged his lineup yesterday by inserting the botch-tastic Eduardo Nunez in the SS spot for Jeter, and definitely undermanaged his bullpen yesterday by leaving Rapada in to face the right-handed Evan Longoria.  Whether it's the first 3 games of the season, the middle 3 games, or the last 3 games, that's sloppy baseball.

Jeremy Hellickson was good today, but he wasn't THAT good.  And Phil Hughes, as well as he threw the ball, fell victim to the same things that always kill him.  He wasn't efficient with his pitches, couldn't put guys away with 2 strikes when he needed to, and couldn't get out of innings clean when he got 2 outs.  As for Raul Ibanez being in the lineup in right field today?  Ummmm, yeesh!

(Courtesy of Mock Session, via RAB.)

Everything the Yankees did in this series seemed to be a little bit off and that's just not what you want to see from your team to start things off.

This is not the end of the world, and it shouldn't have anybody jumping off a bridge or ready to throw the towel in on the entire season.  That would be foolish.  But anybody who says they are OK with how the Yankees played in this opening series or accepts that they lost these 3 games is a bullshit liar.  Any fan, rational or irrational, would have been perfectly within their rights to expect the Yankees to win this series, or at least win one game.  And they are perfectly within their rights to be upset about the Yankees getting swept out of Tampa given how they played in the series.  It's over now, it can't be changed, and everybody (players, coaches, and fans) has to move on to the next series.  That being said, the Yankees need to get their shit together and play better baseball in that next series.  They're a step behind everything that's happening right now, and regardless of how many games are left that's not a good way to open the season.
