Consider:
- The Yankees luxury tax for 2011 will be $13.9 million.
- The luxury tax they paid last year was $18 million.
- The luxury tax they paid in 2009 was $25.7 million.
Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake here, but I was surprised to read that today. But now that I think about it, that makes perfect sense. After they made their big splash with CC/A.J./Teix before '09, we haven't seen the Yankees be very active in the free agent market or at the trade deadline. Lot more short, cheap deals like Bartolo, Freddy, Eric Chavez, etc. Maybe there were already plans in the works to trim payroll before the new CBA even came to be.

I think it is more a change in how the Yankees are looking to spend there money. If we had won on Lee last year the Yankees would not have fallen in regards to this list. the difference is that they are only going to spend if it is for a elite player and none of the pitchers in this years free agent pool were elite, and it looks like Yu is going to get a contract close to cc's, that does not make sense to me.let the kids fill out the roster until one of the best best players is available by trade or free agency. With the teem we have now I think we have a very good chance to make the playoffs, and once there anything can happen. I can understand fans wanting every player available, but don't lose your objectivity about our team, it really is one of the best in baseball.
No doubt there. The Yankees are clearly still one of the top 3-5 teams in baseball even on their worst day.
This post was more just a personal reaction to their recent cost-cutting efforts. I feel like I should have seen this coming earlier. It's not good or bad, it just is. And I do think the time will continue to be competitive whether they are spending a lot or not.
